In 1999, the South Korean government developed and issued a series of exercises for all students to perform in school. The “New Millennium Workout Routine” would ensure that South Korea as a nation would remain healthy for the next 1,000 years.
For New Millennium Workout Routine, artist Yaloopop filmed herself performing a series of the exercises in red thermal long underwear, which was the first Westernized and mass-produced garment in modern day South Korea. The clothing symbolizes wealth and longevity, as well as a complex spiritual connection between the West and East. In the video, Yaloopop multiplies herself to create a sea of red and black bodies. The oscillating movements create complex waves, demonstrating the subtle force of these simple standardized gestures.
