경기도미술관 & IBK기업은행 신진작가 지원 프로그램 수상작가전
4 «얄루, YALOO»
경기도미술관은 2024년 첫 전시로 경기도미술관과 IBK기업은행이 교류, 협력하여 신진작가 지원 프로그램의 일환으로 마련한 수상작가전 《얄루, YALOO》를 개최한다. 경기도미술관이 지속적으로 추진해왔던 청년 작가를 향한 애정 어린 시선과 IBK기업은행의 신진작가 지원에 대한 의지가 의미 있는 결합을 이루어 낸 이번 전시는, 첫 번째 수상작가전임과 동시에 얄루의 첫 개인전의 의미도 담고 있다.
전시제목 《얄루, YALOO》는 작가명임과 동시에 ‘대명사’가 되어 상징적인 예술가로서 자리매김하고픈 작가의 열망을 대변하는 잠재적 고유명사이기도 하다.
얄루가 지속적으로 흥미롭게 탐구하고 있는 작업의 주제는 개인적인 추억과 기억으로부터 출발한다. 이를테면 어린 시절 생일상의 상징이었던 미역국은 그것이 속한 해조류가 지구 태초의 시기인 선캄브리아대에서부터 현재까지 어떻게 이 긴 시간을 생존해온것인지에대한질문으로발전해간다.또한지구모든생명체중최초로암수 성별 구분을 지닌 생명체가 다시마라는 사실을 해조류의 특징을 결합한 신인류를 예측하는 작업으로 발전시킨다. 작가의 이러한 의구심으로부터 비롯되어 제작을 시작한 수중 3부작 연작 시리즈는 이번 경기도미술관 개인전에서 2024년 버전으로 새롭게 제작되어 선보인다.
아울러 얄루는 신화, 설화, 과학기술, K-컬쳐 등 시간을 초월하여 우리에게 상상력을 불러일으켰던 시대별로 회자되는 문화의 특징적인 요소를 다양하고 폭넓게 차용하여 강렬한 영상 이미지로 보는 이를 압도하게 한다.
그녀가 던지는 질문은, 우리가 타자를 바라보는 관심에 대한 인식을 새롭게 할 뿐만 아니라, 기존에 우리가 굳건하다고 믿었던 인간의 조건에 대한 사유들이 과연 현재에도 지속가능한지 고민하게 한다. 인간의 영원불멸에 대한 욕구에서 확장된 새로운 세계와 낯선 육체, 서로 다른 종이 더불어 살아가는 근미래에 대한 얄루만의 독특한 예측을 감각적으로 담아낸 작품들을 통하여, 공동체가 서로의 존재를 인식한다는 것, 서로를 응시한다는 것에 대해 다시 한번 함께 생각해보는 전시가 되기를 기대한다.

The Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art (GMoMA) proudly presents YALOO, Gyeonggi MoMA & IBK Young Artists Award Winner Exhibition, an supporting program for an emerging artists jointly organized by GMoMA and the Industrial Bank of Korea (IBK). The museum’s first exhibition of the year is the result of its continued efforts to engage young, up-and-coming artists and the IBK’s commitment to supporting them. It is the first exhibition by the program’s winner and YALOO’s first-ever solo show.
The exhibition title YALOO represents the artist’s name as well as her hope of establishing it as a byword for an iconic artist.
The longstanding focus of her work stems from personal memories and recollections. For example, a childhood memory of seaweed soup, a staple in Korean birthday celebrations, led her to question how seaweed has survived since the Precambrian era, the earliest part
of Earth’s history. The fact that kelp was the first species on Earth to exhibit sexual differentiation inspired an imaginary scenario about a post-human species with seaweed-like features. Drawing from these questions, YALOO unveils a new version of her Underwater Trilogy in the latest GMoMA exhibition.
Her works are marked by overwhelming moving images that incorporate popular sources of cultural inspiration across different time periods, such as mythology, folklore, science and technology and K-culture.
Her questions invite us to revisit our perception of how we see others and whether the seemingly unwavering conditions that make us humans are still relevant in today’s world. The exhibits are YALOO’s creative interpretation of a near future that combines a new world shaped by man’s desire for immortality, strange bodies and different species. Hopefully, they will remind viewers of what it means for individuals in a community to acknowledge each other’s existence and gaze at each other.
